About
A 85-metre Venetian Gothic clock tower built between 1869 and 1878, funded by banker Premchand Roychand and named after his mother Rajabai, forming part of Mumbai University's Fort campus. Its design, by architect George Gilbert Scott, was modelled on Big Ben and features intricate stone carvings of figures in regional Indian dress representing different castes and communities. It stands alongside the Bombay High Court as one of the twin landmarks of the UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic ensemble around Oval Maidan. The tower's interior is not generally open to the public, though the university occasionally runs guided tours.
Did you know? Rajabai Clock Tower, at 85 metres, was Mumbai's tallest structure when completed in 1878 — modeled on London's Big Ben, its 16 statues represent different Indian communities in traditional dress, carved into the tower's niches.
