About

Mumbai's premier museum, founded in 1922 as the Prince of Wales Museum and renamed after Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, houses over 50,000 artefacts spanning Indian art, archaeology and natural history. Its Indo-Saracenic dome and gardens were designed by architect George Wittet. Collections range from Indus Valley antiquities and Mughal miniatures to Company School paintings and a dedicated natural history wing. It remains one of India's most comprehensive general museums and a key stop on any Mumbai heritage itinerary.
