About

The fortified residence built in 1732 by Peshwa Bajirao I as the seat of Maratha administrative power in Pune, growing over decades into a sprawling seven-storey palace complex. A fire in 1828 destroyed most of the original wooden structures, leaving only the massive stone gates and foundations standing today. The fort was the political heart of the Maratha Empire for over a century. Its Delhi Gate, still studded with iron spikes meant to deter war elephants, is among the best-preserved features.
