About

A rock-cut cave temple carved directly into a basalt outcrop in central Pune, believed to date to the 8th century Rashtrakuta period. Modelled on the Elephanta and Ellora cave traditions, it is dedicated to Shiva and features an unfinished elephant sculpture and a covered assembly hall carved from solid rock. Its incomplete state offers a rare glimpse into the rock-cutting techniques used across Deccan cave architecture. The temple sits in a small public garden in the heart of the city, free to visit year-round.
