About
A ceremonial gateway built by the British in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, and completed in 1924. Designed by architect George Wittet in Indo-Saracenic style, it became the symbolic entry point for viceroys arriving by sea. Ironically, it was also the exit point: the last British troops leaving India departed through this gate in 1948. Today it is Mumbai's most photographed landmark and the departure point for ferries to Elephanta Island.
