About
A 42-metre sandstone war memorial designed by Edwin Lutyens, commemorating over 84,000 Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The Amar Jawan Jyoti flame, added after the 1971 war, honours India's unknown soldiers. It anchors one end of Rajpath (now Kartavya Path), Delhi's ceremonial boulevard used for the annual Republic Day parade. The names of the fallen are inscribed directly onto the monument's walls.
