About
The tomb of Mughal emperor Humayun, commissioned by his widow Empress Bega Begum in 1565, is widely regarded as the direct architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal. It was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, built on a Persian charbagh (four-part garden) plan. Over 150 Mughal family members are buried within the complex. In 1857, the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar took refuge here before his capture by the British.
