One of the world's oldest residential universities, Nalanda Mahavihara flourished from the 5th to the 13th century CE, drawing thousands of monks and scholars from across Asia, including China, Korea, and Tibet, to study Buddhist philosophy, logic, medicine and astronomy under a sprawling campus of monasteries, temples and lecture halls.
Did you know? Chinese pilgrim-scholar Xuanzang studied here in the 7th century and later wrote detailed accounts describing a library so vast it reportedly burned for three months after Bakhtiyar Khilji's raid in the 1190s.
