About
Built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty, the Khajuraho temples were originally a complex of around 85 temples, of which 25 survive today, dedicated to both Hindu and Jain deities. Renowned worldwide for their intricate nagara-style spires and sculptural friezes — a small fraction of which depict erotic themes — the temples are celebrated as a high point of medieval Indian temple art.
Did you know? Khajuraho's temples were abandoned and swallowed by dense forest for centuries after the Chandela dynasty's decline, and were only rediscovered by the outside world in 1838 when a British army engineer, T.S. Burt, was led to the overgrown ruins by his local guides.
