About

Built between 1727 and 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, a keen astronomer, this observatory houses 19 monumental masonry instruments for measuring time, tracking celestial positions, and predicting eclipses with the naked eye, the most complete and best-preserved of the five Jantar Mantars Jai Singh built across northern India.

Did you know? Its largest instrument, the Samrat Yantra, is the world's largest stone sundial, standing 27 metres tall and capable of telling local time accurate to within about two seconds.
