About

Built between 1727 and 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, a keen astronomer, this observatory houses 19 monumental masonry instruments for measuring time, tracking celestial positions, and predicting eclipses with the naked eye — the most complete and best-preserved of the five Jantar Mantars Jai Singh built across northern India.

Did you know? Its largest instrument, the Samrat Yantra, is the world's largest stone sundial — standing 27 metres tall and capable of telling local time accurate to within about two seconds.
