About

India's largest museum, opened on its current Janpath site in 1960, holds over 200,000 artefacts spanning 5,000 years of Indian art, archaeology and history, from Harappan Civilization seals to Mughal miniatures. Its galleries cover sculpture, decorative arts, arms and armour, and a dedicated Central Asian antiquities collection acquired through early 20th-century expeditions. The museum has long been discussed as the future anchor of India's planned National Museum complex redevelopment. It remains the single most comprehensive repository of Indian art and history under one roof.
